1977 – The choice to change the engine was dealt by the entire SWM team with great courage and they took up the challenge to design a completely new bike, able to make a further an important step forward.
The great changes which were taking place in the racing world required the same changes to the bikes which took part to those competitions.
The difficulty in the path remained unchanged for more than ten years and the technological evolution registered a constant and widespread growth so that the performing qualities were almost the same.
More and more bikers could end up the path with no penalties and the differences were based mainly on the special tests, which were more cross-featured and thus required bikes more similar to the cross bikes both for their design and structure.
The tape was easier to handle and it might represent an advantage on off-road bikes, so the SWM technicians concentrated on this.
The wide experienced gathered in this area over the year, led to the creation of a lighter, clean and rational frame with a single cradle, doubled in the head and featured by a higher barycentre with a longer pace.
The back big fork was long and had an oval section, it allowed a higher inclination of the shock-absorbers, while it decreased slightly the wheel inclination.

The new bikes were first prepared only for the official team but they were soon traded in June, just the time to carry out the needed tests and trials. They showed an excellent creativity and the Milanese technicians’ high skills.
The passage from the prototype to the end model, introduced at the Milan Motor show at the end of the year, meant going through an evolution phase rich in changes which took place over the entire season.
Since the very beginning a deep collaborative relationship was established with the Austrian technicians and the aim was to realize a more efficient engine than the mass-produced one, especially designed for the team’s needs.
The improvements concerned also the aesthetic, the SWM brand was enlighten and was printed on the engine side carters, on the bellows, on the stoppers and several elastics, and also on the mud-guards and wherever it could have been printed.
